The Communist League of Uganda (CLU) convened its inaugural Congress earlier this week, an important milestone indicating the two-year old formation is gearing up for the long-term.

The CLU emerged out of a WhatsApp study group named "Communist Ideologies," originally formed in October 2024 to share political literature and contemporary analysis. The formation quickly established its own offices in the village of Nantabulirwa in November 2024, followed by offices in rural towns of Bugiri and Lira. As of a [February 2026](https://www.die-rote-front.de/en/red-flags-at-lake-victoria-another-interview-with-the-communist-league-of-uganda-february-2026?ref=movement.mymidnight.blog) interview, further CLU base building efforts are said to be ongoing throughout West, North, Central, and Eastern Uganda.

In a January 2025 interview [with *Die Rote Front*](https://www.die-rote-front.de/en/interview-with-the-communist-league-of-uganda-january-2025?ref=movement.mymidnight.blog), Sozzi Joseph, chairperson for the CLU, stated that the group's principle goal is to establish "a revolutionary platform for liberation of the oppressed and exploited peasants, workers and poor people." Other political stances outlined in the *Die Rote* interview include reclaiming the socialist legacy of the [first Uganda People's Congress](https://www.upcparty.net/?ref=movement.mymidnight.blog) under Apollo Milton Obote; reorganizing the country's agricultural sector under collectivist lines; and establishing "state owned industries in the key critical areas of \[the\] economy."

Internationally, the CLU maintains a skepticism toward China and BRICS, in-line with New Communist movement in the imperial core, and Hoxhaists in the periphery. As the chairperson stated: "through such projects imperialistic countries like China get a chance to obtain such idle resources at a relatively low value."

"Our ideological outlook is socialism," Joseph continued, "based and guided by the classics of Marxism-Leninism principles and doctrines of collectivization of the means of production, planned economy and collective leadership as well with the classic ideas of Marx, Engels, Lenin, Joseph Stalin, Chairman Mao and Dr Apollo Milton Obote.

That the CLU is emerging from Nantabulirwa is not by random chance. According to [local reporting](https://www.monitor.co.ug/uganda/magazines/homes-and-property/nantabulirwa-where-a-resident-was-killed-for-abusing-the-kabaka-1699348?ref=movement.mymidnight.blog) from 2017, the village has developed at a much slower clip compared to surrounding areas, hampered by the widespread exploitation of workers and peasants by landlords, whose families have gripped vast tracks of land for generations. Supply of residential and commercial real estate has been slow as a result of this landlord class, resulting in huge demand and therefore competition for housing.

Case in point: in 2017, the average cost to rent a three-bedroom family home in Nantabulirwa was estimated at around $1070.44 to $1338.05 USD, a suffocating price given the extremely low average monthly salary [across Uganda](https://wage.is/uganda?ref=movement.mymidnight.blog). The objective conditions for a revolutionary movement in Uganda appear ripe — and it remains to be seen how the CLU will rise to the occasion.
