What is Movement Notes?
Movement Notes is a publication covering socialist organizations and national liberation groups worldwide. It's a platform to report on parties, factions, organizing efforts, and political repression using original reporting and news aggregation.
My intended readers are organizers, journalists, researchers, and anyone who needs a reliable record of these movements.
Focus and Scope
There are over 200 active communist formations and many more national liberation organizations worldwide, many of which even the most well-read organizer will never hear of.
These organizations and the movements they contribute to are scarcely covered with true objectivity by Western journalists. Instead they are mocked, twisted, or ignored, leaving essential information unreported. Further complicating the issue is the fact that these groups usually follow wildly different ideological lines and pursue often contradictory goals. As a result, important political movements can be made up of numerous organizations with conflicting ideologies and strategies, distinctions which most Western journalists couldn't be bothered with.
This blog is meant to fill that gap, and be a home for quality movement journalism.
Editorial Principles
Some sites share information about movements and organizations, but few take a journalistic approach to curating news about them. Publications that engage honestly usually spend time debunking claims by corporate journalists, publishing lengthy essays and analysis, or are news organs representing particular sponsors and their strategic interests. These all have their place, but they leave a gap: clear, accessible reporting on developments within the movements themselves.
Movement Notes is meant to fill that gap. It follows the basic line established by Argentine journalist Jorge Ricardo Masetti, to be “objective, but not impartial."
In sum, the goal is to build Movement Notes into an essential citation on socialist organizations and national liberation movements.
