The Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy hospital ship Auspicious Ark docked at the Port of Conakry on October 3rd for s even-day visit, the first by a Chinese medical vessel to Guinea, according to Xinhua, China's state daily newswire. The Guinean outlet Guinéenews reported that the ship would offer free consultations, examinations, and procedures to patients chosen in advance.

Guinéenews further reported the ship’s commander as saying that more than 1,500 patients had been treated by October 7th, with a stated goal of treating nearly 5,000 by its eventual departure on October 10th, though the final count wasn't immediately obvious. Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah toured the ship that day at a ceremony marking the 77th anniversary of the People's Republic of China.

The Ark is reportedly capable of of seeing up to 600 patients a day for consultations, operations, and outreach visits. The PLA has been contacted regarding the final patient-count in Conakry.

The visit has been described in several ways. Cap’Ivoire Info, citing China's Defense Ministry, reports that the mission is meant to strengthen ties with the countries visited and advance China's Global Security Initiative. Xinhua's account, via The Star, adds reference to cultural exchanges, including a planned visit by naval personnel to the Confucius Institute at the University of Conakry. Radio Free Asia and Voice of America, both media arms of the US government, framed earlier humanitarian voyages by the Ark's sister vessels as soft-power "wins" for China. Local Guinéenews called the ship's presence a visible symbol of closer ties between Conakry and Beijing.

The Ark also arrives in a country with a long-standing Chinese medical presence. Guinéenews reports that Chinese medical teams have worked in the country for 58 years, the majority of Guinea's existence as an independent state.

In an interview with a member of the ship's current staff, the local outlet reported that the Sino-Guinean Friendship Hospital in the Ratoma prefecture of Conakry recorded over 13,000 outpatient consultations, nearly 2,800 admissions, and 840 operations in 2024, one year after the hospital's inauguration.
